The currently untitled new CD/DVD project is an exciting collection of three trios.  Two of them are acoustic works for somewhat unique instrumental ensembles.  An older trio for bass clarinet, contrabass, and celeste, entitled “Portrait of Two Idiots: Randall Terry and Jesse Helms; Senseless Babble with Fascist  Overtones”  (1990/1991) will be included, as well as a new work for viola, English horn, and bassoon.  This work, known by it’s mildly unwieldy title, “Theme, variations, a digression, some completely unrelated material, and 3 Haiku – not necessarily in that order – for viola, English horn, and bassoon“, also contains text by my good friend, poet Ruth Paterson.  The former is scheduled for an early Spring recording.  It has been performed in Los Angeles, as part of American Music Week, as well as at June In Buffalo, many moons ago.  The latter, written for my daughter, Jessica Elise Mantel (violist) was recently recorded in Charlotte, NC, after a wonderful premiere performance at the CPCC Artsfest, 2008

The centerpiece of the CD/DVD is the work 3 Trios in 5 Acts.  This work of course, is rather a meta trio, as the description of the work would imply.  The piece will be adapted for a site-specific performance in Milwaukee sometime in the near future.  The shooting schedule for the video is currently being planned.  The work is being re-scored, retaining a certain amount of the improvisation included in the original performance, while using some previously improvised sections as a blueprint for a more through composed work.
